About

Hi, I'm James Macon, a landscape and astrophotographer based in Portland, ME. My journey into photography began in middle school when I got my first polaroid camera. I wanted to create stunning and soulful images after seeing films shot by cinematographer Roger Deakins, flipping through the portrait work by Annie Leibovitz and Herb Ritts in Vanity Fair, and watching behind the scenes documentaries on the special effects work done by the magicians at Industrial Light and Magic.
In high school, I discovered the work of Ansel Adams, which introduced me to landscape photography. The outdoors has always been a place of refuge for me, and through landscape photography, I found a way to share the awe and tranquility I experience in nature with others.
Growing up, my father would teach my brother and me about the constellations in the night sky. This childhood curiosity evolved into a desire to capture and share the stunning dark skies I had access to with friends and family back home. Thus, my passion for astrophotography was born.
Although I have no formal training, I have dedicated countless hours to learning from the best through YouTube channels of photographers such as Nigel Danson, James Popsys, Kyle McDougall, and the late Alyn Wallace. Today, I specialize in astrophotography and landscape photography, with a particular focus on the landscapes and night skies of New England.
My work continues to be inspired by the visual storytelling of cinematographers in film and television, as well as the work of photographers Pete Souza, Kai Hornung, Dustin LeFevre, and Daniel Kordan.
